Almost A Year In Hiatus!

Wow! Looking back at my last blog, I realised that it is almost a year since I last blogged! Not surprising given that I lacked two essential elements in being a blogger : time and the need to reveal all!

I am a pretty private person, but my work forces me to be an extrovert. A huge disconnect but one I have learned to live with… I have to! I am mostly in sales and marketing – simply because I like to travel, learn about new culture, eat great food, make new friends and curious about most things..

What is a Blog?

The other day a good friend of mine, a blogger, commented to other friends that she found my blog to be filled with different topics, unlike hers. So that got me thinking… What is a Blog and What constitutes blogging? And is a blogger supposed to do only blog or commlog or edilog or whatever new term you can coin for pouring your thoughts out over the ether?

Excuse Me, Are You A Photographer?

This laughable goal was one issue I was asked to seriously think about by Mr Charlie Tan, a longtime member of Flickr. I came across Flickr in Apr 2006 and Charlie came to guide me along. ( Thanks Charlie! ) And at that time, I was all of a month old in the digital camera world.

And my almost maiden attempts can be seen at right when I was in the Aladdin’s Cave which was my friend’s corporate gift shop, about a week after purchase of the camera. Looking at my photos then, I knew I’d better concentrate on working on my day job and forget about dreams and such goals. And yes, by the way, I am still using the same Point-and-Shoot camera, with a $660 price tag – the Panasonic Lumix FZ5 – which I finally decided upon after a month’s or so of reading the review from CNet.com. Conference on Autism, 12 and 13 July

The very first time a conference was put together bringing practitioners treating autism to come together under one roof. A brilliant idea! Parents can for the first time see the various practitioners outside the clinic settings, compare methods and methodology and get to talk to other parents about Autism.

Can Ambulance Drivers Drive?

Looking at the current incidents I witnessed, my answer is a big NO! Many ambulance drivers seemed only able to take a direct approach! When in a jam, that approach works against the driver and the emergency he is trying to rush to or from. Probably ambulance drivers have been warned not to cut in and out of traffic during their journey. Dont know if this was due to the organisation’s desire not to add another possible accident or speaks volume about Singapore drivers in general.

Of course, on the other hand, Singaporean drivers seemed oblivious to the sirens! Either they are zonked out or they chose to ignore! Let’s pray that they are never to be caught in a similar situation!

Can Singapore Set Sail?

I just came back from my first sailing trip yesterday… and I get this thought! No! Saltwater did not addled my brain… I was just thinking — Singapore is an island.. and how many people can swim, never mind properly or for at least 10 laps around the pool? How many people can paddle a canoe? how many people can sail a boat? and finally how many people want to own a boat?

Organic is Good!

Following my trip from Bangkok, I was given one task by fellow Singaporeans and entrepreneurs living in Bangkok – help them market their products into Singapore. Well, we have to work with our own people of course! So off I went this morning to an orchid farm I knew… to ask the growers there if they wanted to try an organic fertilizer, with microbes for the soil… and then to a veg farm to do the same…. Both set of owners welcomed me and were enthusiatic about the new product. They both felt that organic would be good as their clients would welcome the end products more readily, as well as pay more… enlightened growers indeed…

To many people Bangkok is a place of cheap goods, great food and friendly people. Until you are not a tourist will you find a huge divide; between the rich and the poor; the educated and the non-educated; the white collar and the blue collar. You will also find lots of foreign talents here! Surprisingly given that Thailand has a huge population! But I was told that about 70% are farmers or live in the villages!

This figurine greets all visitors as they depart Bangkok’s Su- var-na-bhum-bi Airport ( do not pronounce the “bi” or the driver will have a quizzical look on his face!). …

Are Autistics Retarded?

I put this question to Dr Joseph Guan when I visited his clinic some two months ago. “That is a popular misconception I need to change”, answered Dr Guan, Clinical Director of the Brain Enhancement Centre working on mainly children and young adults with autism.

I came to this question when I noticed several boys sitting on chairs and a few of them were staring into space.

Dr Joseph Guan explained that Autism was being misunderstood and sometimes mis-diagnosed. This was because Autism is a Spectrum Disorder. What this means is that autistics exhibit a wide range of behaviour.
